Our Lady of Mercy, also known as Our Lady of Ransom, appeared in the year 1218 to Saint Raimund, King James I of Aragon, and to Saint Peter Nolasco in three separate apparitions. Our Lady asked the three of them to contribute to establishing an order for redeeming Christian captives. During this time, the Spanish, particularly, were subject to raids in which they would be captured, imprisoned, sold into slavery and often forced to renounce their Catholic faith or face discrimination, torture and death. The three of them worked together to establish the Celestial and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy and the Redemption of the Captives, and it was said that the Order contributed to saving over 70,000 Christians from slavery.
